Requirements
A wind turbine manufacturer sought comprehensive solutions to reduce the noise generated when the generator produces electricity. Noise reduction is particularly important when wind turbines are located close to residential areas, but also in natural environments – such as the countryside, dense forests, jungles, and at sea – where the sound can cause serious disruption to wildlife.
Similar noise disturbances from generators also occur in hydropower plants.
Antiphon’s solution
Initially, MPM was tested around the generator with very positive results, which led the customer to explore solutions for the entire structure – foundations, fastenings, cladding, and so on. This request also opens up the use of other sound-dampening materials such as heavy layers, damping pads, and airborne sound absorbers.
By enclosing the generator in the wind turbine, a reduction of 6–8 dB was achieved using MPM, which both pleased and surprised the customer. This is yet another example of MPM’s unique ability to improve the environment by reducing structural noise.
